The present picture is a version of the altarpiece recorded in collection of HRH the Prince of Liechtenstein (catalogue of 1873, n01092). It is a typical example of Antwerp Mannerism. M.J. Friedländer, Early Netherlandish Painting, 1974, XI, has distinguished individual artists within the group of Antwerp mannerists, although the stylistic phenomenon is now understood to have been rooted in the tradition of studio practice in which more than one artist was responsible for the work. The style of the Liechtenstein picture and consequently that of the present lot comes closest to that of the Master of the Antwerp Adoration, who takes his name from the altarpiece in the Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten, Antwerp (Friedländer, op. cit., p.72, n046, plate 49).
