The inscription means "Great Pozsony (Bratislava) steeple chase 30 April 1914, given to the winning rider by His Imperial Apostolic Royal Majesty" (Franois-Joseph, as the cipher in gold reminds us). As it was a royal gift it has no assay marks, as such marks were used as a guarantee of the quality of the material but also to show that the state tax had been paid, which clearly was not necessary in the case of a royal trophy.
