Ingrain carpets, such as the present lot and lot 52, were widely used by prosperous Americans throught the 19th century as floor coverings. These are always flat weaves and are usually two-ply, meaning that ther are two sets of weft in different colors that produce the design and the colors are therefore reversed on the other side.
