A VERY RARE IMPERIAL BRONZE INCENSE BURNER AND COVER
KANGXI FOUR-CHARACTER MARK AND OF THE PERIOD

Cast in three parts, the square body with a concave base, cast with the nianhao within a recessed square, supported on four feet issuing from animal masks, the detachable sides similarly pierced to each face with an archaistic dragon, surmounted by a cover with similar panels below a phoenix finial framed with a lotus lappet border, the patina of golden-brown tone
6 7/8 in. (17.4 cm.) diam.

Compare the famille verte versions of three-part censers attributed to the Kangxi period. One sold in these Rooms, 20 March 1990, lot 681. Another from the Palace Museum, Beijing, is illustrated in Kangxi, Yongzheng, Qianlong, p. 82, no. 65.

Mark and period bronzes are rare and a marked piece makes a useful guide in dating 'later' bronzes (cf. note to the previous lot). A Kangxi-marked bombe censer from the Victoria and Albert Museum is illustrated by Kerr in Later Chinese Bronzes, p. 37, fig. 25.
