Comparable rhytons are usually carved from jade and rock crystal is more usually carved into baluster vases and covers. This is an example of the unexpected and the original stand is also a rarity. Compare the jade rhyton illustrated in Zhongguo Meishu Quanji, vol. 6, Jade, p. 24 and the jade dragon-carp vase on a similar carved wave base illustrated in Masterworks of Chinese Jade in the National Palace Museum, pl. 25. Compare also the rock crystal carp again on a carved wave base in Zhongguo Meishu Quanji, vol. 6, p. 94.
