The rustic Chinese landscape cresting with pagoda-man temple relates to that on a suite of 'Chinese' seat furniture with 'scrolled top rails' commissioned in 1766 by Lady Delaval for her apartments at Ford Castle, Northumberland from William Davidson (d.1773), cabinetmaker of Berwick (see L.Wood, 'William Davidson of Berwick-upon-Tweed', F.H.S.J., 1995, pp.29-46). The arched doors and lozenged mosaic glazing are derived from patterns for bookcases published in A Society of Upholsterer's Genteel Household Furniture in the Present Taste, part I, 2nd edn., 1765, pl.51 and 70.

The Bury (now known as Lowndes Park) in Chesham, Buckinghamshire was built for William Loundes, Secretary to William III's Treasury.
