Lady Christiana Collyear was the wife of Admiral Sir George Collyear, and sister of General Gwynn whose wife, Mary Horneck, was an intimate friend of Reynolds. One of the several versions of this portrait was exhibited by Reynolds in 1764 at the Society of Artists, Bath. Other versions include the work in the Cleveland Museum of Art, Ohio, Inv. no. 20.514. Mezzotint engravings by James Watson, Richard Houston, and G. Graham attest to its popularity among later artists.
