Little is known of the early life of Frye although he is thought to have been born in Dublin, moving to London circa 1734. His reputation must have been well established some two years after this date when he was commissioned to paint Frederick, Prince of Wales to commemorate his appointment as Perpetual Master of the Company of Saddlers. His painting career was interrupted in 1744 when he became involved in the establishment of the Bow porcelain factory in Essex. He managed this company through one of its most prosperous periods until he retired, due to ill health, in 1759.

The present painting is probably datable to the latter years of his life, from the full resumption of his career as a painter in 1760 until his death from consumption in 1762. During this period his portraits, drawings, and mezzotints attest to the influence of Venetian eighteenth century artists on his work.
