Dubreuil made few photographs in Paris in 1909 that incorporated street scenes with overlaid foreground objects. This print is the only known example of this image made with the umbrella on the right side- and although it may not be obvious to the casual observer, this is a composite picture. This print was clearly made for exhibition purposes with a dated monogram and the colored notations on the verso which indicate that this print had been submitted to the most prestigious international of the time, the London Salon. In addition to one other work titled Les Boulevards from 1909, now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, this is the only other print from the period made with this rare dated monogram. This print was in the collection of Pawel Barchan, Dubreuil's editor, agent and critic. The Barchan provenance is rare, as most of the collection was seized by the Nazis. Barchan later fell victim to a concentration camp.
