A MONUMENTAL VICTORIAN SILVER-GILT TANKARD
MAKER'S MARK OF CHARLES FREDERICK HANCOCK, LONDON, 1882

Cylindrical, on domed spreading foot chased with a band of putti, bearded masks and hounds inhabiting foliage and fruit with scrolls at intervals on a matted ground, below an applied beaded border, the body elaborately cast and chased with a scene of Romans in combat against Visigoths, the front applied with a cast figure of a spread eagle, the handle formed as a satyr astride a scroll holding aloft two young satyrs entwined in amorous dalliance and headed by a winged sea monster, the hinged domed cover chased with a scene of Knights engaging in combat and surmounted by a water-leaf finial with central flange headed by a plain knop, the rim engraved with an inscription, marked on body, cover and finial, the foot stamped HANCOCKS & CO 39 BRUTON ST LONDON
