Lot Essay

Silver by Peter Oliver (1682-1712) is exceedingly rare. Kathryn Buhler cited just four pieces by this maker in American Silver in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, 1972, p. 121. Samuel Sewell, diarist, attended Peter Oliver's funeral on April 29, 1712.

The cherub's-mask terminal on the present cann appears to be cast from the same mold as that on a tankard by John Coney at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, illus. Buhler, op. cit., fig. 52, p. 62.
