These acanthus-entwined candlesticks are designed in the French picturesque manner and with their bacchic youths attending vases supported on spiralled columns with cartouche-enriched domed plinth, they evolve from a 1728 pattern by Juste-Aurèle Meissonier (d.1750), which was engraved by Louis Delplaces (d.1739) (S. Lambert, Pattern and Design, London, 1983, p.62, no.2.3.i).
