This watercolour, which was formerly attributed to Thomas Girtin (whose influence can clearly be seen), is similar in size, subject and technique to Cader Idris, from above Llaneltyd in the Victoria and Albert Museum (see C. Kauffmann, John Varley, exhibition catalogue, 1984, pp.92-3, pl.2). The wide panoramic viewpoint is typical of Varley's early watercolours and the present watercolour could possibly be the one exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1801 (no.306) with the title View of Cader Idris, North Wales.
