An attic sub-tyrrhenian neck-amphora
Circa 530 B.C.
With double reeded handles each with red painted circle on the upper side, on each side of the neck an ivy frieze with alternating red and black leaves, ivy leaf below each handle, three red lines below scenes and above the rays around foot which is painted black to half way down outer edge
A: Two warriors in combat with attendants standing to either side, each attendant with red hair wearing himation with red fold, carrying spear, in the centre the warriors both wear short chiton, red helmet and greaves, and sword strap from which hangs sword, and holds spear in raised right hand and shield on left arm. The left warrior has high-crested helmet and a large snake device emerging from his shield, the right warrior has crested helmet
B: Similar scene, now largely missing, (repaired from fragments and partly restored, especially side B, varnished)
