An Attic black-figure lip cup, attributed to the Centaur Painter
Circa 550-530 B.C.
The interior black glazed with reserved line around the lip, at the centre a reserved disc with central circle and dot, the exterior with black line just below lip and reserved stripe on black body, reserved edge to foot, four handle palmettes with red hearts
Lip A: A naked satyr running animatedly in pursuit, his left arm stretched out before him, his right arm out behind him, added red for beard, tail and musculature
Lip B: A maenad running in flight, her arms raised in motion before and behind her, she wears black girdled peplos with red overskirt, her face and limbs with added white, between the handle palmettes on each side the inscription (Chaire kai piei eu - Hail/rejoice and drink well), two letters missing on side B, (repaired from fragments with minor restoration)
