Bourne set out in July of 1863 on his first major Himalayan trek with a team of thirty coolies to photograph the dramatic landscape over a ten-week journey. The photographs from this trip are among the first Bourne sold to English tourists in India. Although he did not enter into partnership with Howard until early 1864, this series of photographs made in and around Simla in 1863 were sold under the name Howard & Bourne.
