The inscription 'Lai Lyn' may be an inaccurate transliteration of the artist's Indian name. 'Ardia Alba, Lin(?)' refers to the Latin classification of the Great White Heron, a bird found in Europe and temperate Asia. The reference 'Lin' refers to Linneus (1707-1778), the scientist who attempted to classify the natural world.
