Maria Isabella, fifth daughter of Carlos IV, King of Spain, see lot 122, and his wife Maria Luisa, married King Francesco I of Naples-Two-Sicilies as his second wife. Their eldest son, Ferdinand succeeded his father as Ferdinand II in 1830 and became known under the nick-name of .
These kind of double-sided/cut-out miniatures were a speciality of a Naples court miniaturist. One is in the Musée Condé, Chantilly, another was in the Brewster collection, sold Sotheby's, Geneva, 15 November 1995, lot 281, and another one is in the Museo Nazionale de San Martino, Naples.
