Descriptif du lot

Above a peaceful landscape and against the backdrop of a dark sky rendered with dense horizontal lines, a fight takes place between good and evil. The figure of the Archangel Michael, commander of God's army, is the focal point of the scene, who with his heavenly comrades fights not just the Devil himself, but a host of fantastical demons. The illustration is the eleventh of fifteen woodcuts from the Apocalypse series. Dürer borrowed not just the idea of an aerial struggle from Schongauer's famous engraving of the Temptation of Saint Anthony (Lehrs 54), but must have also been inspired by design of some of Schongauer's fantastical beasts. Dürer's woodcut, which reached a far wider audience than Schongauer's prints, became of one the most emblematic representations of the triumph of the Angels over the Devil.
