Descriptif du lot

Following the National Academy of Design's exhibition of 1895-96—which included the present work—one contemporary critic lauded, "[There are] three noble landscapes by the late George Inness...They are so elevated in style, so rich in the expression of a rare and beautiful individuality, so fresh and convincing in their echo of nature's voice. The central canvas, in the row of three, is a large study called 'After a Spring Shower at Montclair.' It is quivering with vitality and is superb in its play of warm and mellow color." ("The Autumn Academy," New York Daily Tribune, December 22, 1895, p. 7) Indeed, the present work demonstrates Inness' sensitivities to the subtleties of nature and its seasonal changes, with the work's monumental scale heightening each detail and enveloping the viewer.
