Descriptif du lot

An endless source of inspiration for many generations of artists, the city of Paris served as the subject of many iconic works by Bernard Buffet, who was born in the French capital in 1928, and attended the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts there.

Place de la Concorde belongs to a series of paintings executed in 1956 exhibited at the Galerie David et Garnier under the title ‘Paysages de Paris’, where they were met with great commercial success. The group comprises almost twenty views of Paris’s landmarks, including the Eiffel Tower, Notre-Dame, the Place Vendôme, Sacre-Cœur and the Tour Saint-Jacques, and is said to have inspired a series of poems by Louise de Vilmorin (Exh. cat., Rétrospective Bernard Buffet, Paris, 2016, p. 108).

Today, these large-scale Paris landscapes are still considered to be among the most sought-after series of works by Bernard Buffet. The present work, which belongs to this well-celebrated series is being offered for the first time since it was sold to the present owners in 1986, and has been cherished in the same private collection for over thirty years.
