Descriptif du lot

1904 was the year that Henry Scott Tuke was accepted as an Associate of the Royal Society of Painters in Water-Colours, and this is one of six works he exhibited at the Society's winter exhibition. It relates strongly to his first exhibit in the summer show entitled Blue-Jacket's Yarn (R407) which featured young sailor cadets in uniform.

Set in Falmouth harbour with a 'Windjammer' in the background, this watercolour would have been executed from one of Tuke's many boats used as both floating studios and sailing craft. A young cadet is at the oars of a rowing boat, whilst a local fisherman, Neddy Hall, has a fishing line off the back of the boat 'whiffling' for fish.

We are grateful to Catherine Wallace for her help in preparing this catalogue entry.
