'Often a headline or joke or vernacular expression will conjure up a striking image, which then has to be translated using the available materials. They in turn have their own look, associations and feel. I tend to have a lot of words or phrases running around my brain. When I'm working I keep turning them over. Eventually particular phrases find their way to particular objects and get married, i.e., help each other'
