Descriptif du lot

The sitter is believed to be Elizabeth Dale, daughter of a Whitby surgeon. She was born in circa 1742 and adopted by her aunt, Frances Dale, who married Colonel Charles Hervey Smith of Aspley House, Bedfordshire. Elizabeth married a Mr. Muncaster of Wallsend House, Newcastle. The sitter would have been almost a contemporary of the artist.
