Descriptif du lot

A fine example of Thorburn's lifelong passion for the Highlands, particularly when decked out in their Autumn glory and with his beloved Red Grouse fleeing ahead of the guns.

Thorburn regularly stayed with his great friend and patron, John Henry Dixon, first at his home at Inveran in Ross-shire and later at Dundarrock in Pitlochry in Perthshire, both in the midst of grouse country, where Thorburn would replenish his sketchbooks with dexterous thumbnail drawings to be used on his return to his home and studio at Hascombe in Surrey and duly incorporated in important watercolours, of which the present watercolour is a fine example.

We are grateful to John Southern for his help in cataloguing this watercolour.
