A DERUTA MAIOLICA ISTORIATO GOLD-LUSTRE CHARGER
SECOND QUARTER OF THE 16TH CENTURY
Painted in blue and enriched in gold-lustre with a scantily draped bearded figure, rending the jaws of a lion in a landscape, the broad a quatieri border with panels of scale-pattern alternating with scrolling foliage (hairline crack from 8 o'clock running through centre to well at 2 o'clock, minor chipping to rims, some slight crazing and minor flaking to enamel)
15 5/8 in. (39.6 cm.) diam.

Partial paper label attached to the reverse, perhaps for the Imbert Collection

Descriptif du lot

The subject is traditionally described as Hercules slaying the Nemean Lion, but it could also depict Samson and the Lion. For a similar dish with the subject reversed (suggesting the subject was derived from a print source), see Bernard Rackham, Islamic Pottery and Italian Maiolica, Illustrated Catalogue of a Private Collection (London, 1959), pl. 156A, no. 356. The subject's popularity is discussed by Dora Thornton and Timothy Wilson, Italian Renaissance Ceramics, a Catalogue of the British Museum Collection (London, 2009), Vol. II, pp. 493-495.
