he prototype for this work is a picture given by John Oliver Hand to the workshop of Joos van Cleve, and dated by him to circa 1525 (s-Heerenberg, Huis Bergh, Dr. J.H. van Heek Collection, inv. no. 60; see J.O. Hand, Joos van Cleve: The Complete Paintings, New Haven and London, 2004, no. 106, p. 180, fig. 154).
