L’œuvre de John alliait une brillante maîtrise technique à un style audacieux et vigoureux qui traduisait une intense profondeur psychologique. Ses portraits, en particulier, lui ont valu la réputation d’être l’un des portraitistes les plus doués de sa génération, représentant écrivains, hommes politiques et personnalités culturelles avec une perspicacité pénétrante. Il était également attiré par les thèmes romantiques et symboliques, influencé par le post- l'impressionnisme français et son admiration pour Rembrandt.
Tout aussi significative était sa fascination pour les communautés gitanes et nomades, qui a inspiré tant son art que sa vie personnelle non conventionnelle. John peignait des fresques murales, des paysages et des sujets mythologiques, mais c'est son art du portrait qui a assuré sa renommée.
Dans les années 1920, il était largement considéré comme le premier portraitiste britannique, dont seuls des contemporains tels que William Orpen pouvaient rivaliser. Parmi ses modèles figuraient T. E. Lawrence, W. B. Yeats et Dylan Thomas, parmi tant d’autres. Bien que sa réputation ait décliné par la suite, John reste une figure centrale de l’histoire de l’art britannique moderne, incarnant à la fois le génie et les excès de l’avant-garde édouardienne.
