Annie Leibovitz

Annie Leibovitz is one of the most influential photographers of her generation, celebrated for her distinctive portraits of cultural figures, artists, politicians and public personalities. Combining the immediacy of photojournalism with carefully constructed compositions, she has developed a visual language recognised for its bold use of colour, theatrical settings and revealing depictions of her subjects.

Born in Waterbury, Connecticut in 1949, the artist initially studied painting at the San Francisco Art Institute. Her interest in photography developed after she bought her first camera in 1968 and began taking night classes. In 1970, while still a student, she approached Rolling Stone magazine with a portfolio of photographs. Her work impressed the editors, and she was soon commissioned to photograph John Lennon. Three years later, she became the magazine’s chief photographer, a position she held until 1983. During this period, she documented the leading musicians of the era, including Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones, whose 1975 American tour she photographed.

In 1983, she joined the newly relaunched Vanity Fair, expanding her focus beyond music to include film stars, writers, artists and political figures. She began contributing regularly to Vogue in 1998, producing fashion editorials and advertising campaigns alongside her editorial portraiture. Her photographs are often distinguished by elaborate staging and unexpected juxtapositions, transforming familiar personalities into compelling visual narratives.

Among her best-known images is her 1980 portrait of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, taken just hours before Lennon’s death. The intimate composition, showing Lennon curled around Ono, became one of the most widely recognised images of the 20th century. The photograph sold for $33,600 at Christie’s New York in 2007. Other celebrated portraits include Whoopi Goldberg submerged in a bath of milk and Demi Moore’s 1991 Vanity Fair pregnancy cover.

Leibovitz has published numerous photographic books, including Women (1999), created in collaboration with Susan Sontag, and A Photographer’s Life, 1990–2005 (2006). In 1991, she became the first woman to receive a solo exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. Her photographs are held in major museum collections internationally, and she continues to work and exhibit worldwide.
