Classic Week New York Winter 2024

Art from antiquity to the 20th century

  • Event date 1月29日 - 2月2日
  • Event location 纽约

Classic Week in New York totalled $54 million and sold 80% by lot across eight live and online auctions comprising art from antiquity to the 20th century.

Starting the sale series with a bang, Arms and Armour from the Mougins Museum of Classical Art, Part 1 was 100% sold with a total of $6.5 million against a low estimate of $3.4 million. On the same day, The Quentin Collection: Masterpieces of Renaissance and Baroque Sculpture featured the top lot of the week, Giambologna's subtly erotic bronze, Sleeping Nymph, which achieved $5,979,000.

Newly discovered (or rediscovered) masterpieces led the Old Masters auctions. Sir Anthony van Dyck’s Portrait of Willem Hondius — one of the most important Northern renderings to have surfaced in recent decades — realised $2,107,000, breaking a 40-year-old world record for a drawing by the artist, also previously set at Christie’s. Another standout, Saint John the Baptist in the Wilderness, depicting unusual iconography from the singular female artist Artemisia Gentileschi, sold for $982,800, more than doubling its low estimate.

A pair of online auctions closed out the series, in which a copy of the second edition of Vesalius’ magnum opus, De Humani Corporis Fabrica Libri Septem, achieved $2,228,000 million against a low estimate of $800,000.
