Christie’s 20th/21st Century Art October season in London achieves a combined total of £120,658,341 over five live auctions and two online sales

On 13 October, the art world and beyond gathered in the vibrant city of London as well as online for the livestreamed auctions of 20th/21st Century: London Evening Sale and The Sina Jina Collection. Our Evening Sale totalled £72,533,850, with excellent sell-through rates of 100% both by lot and by value. Fresh-to-market works led the sale with David Hockney’s sublime Early Morning, Sainte-Maxime selling for £20,899,500, Gerhard Richter’s Study for Clouds (Green-blue) realising £11,167,000, and Francis Bacon’s Painting 1990 achieving £7,102,250. Tracey Emin’s Like A Cloud of Blood was sold by the artist to raise funds for her pioneering TKE Studios in Margate. Reaching £2,322,000, it set the record price for a painting by Emin.

A Place with No Name: Works from the Sina Jina Collection, the largest single-owner collection of contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora, totalled £2,960,484 with eight artist auction records established. Lynette Yiadom-Boakye’s Highpower took top billing at £1,482,000, along with Aboudia’s Untitled (£302,400) and El Anastui’s Drying Line (£126,000). A minimum of 20% from the auction will benefit The African Arts Trust in support of a further number of arts and environment charities internationally.

The Post-War and Contemporary Art Day Sale totalled £15,843,348 on 14 October, highlighted by top prices achieved in our various philanthropic collaborations with The Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (İKSV), Parley for the Ocean and CLEFT. Part of Istanbul Calling Works Sold to Benefit İKSV’s 50th Anniversary Young Artists Fund, Beauford Delaney’s portrait of James Baldwin led the sale with a record-breaking £1,026,000. We saw strong results achieved for female artists, featuring Yayoi Kusama’s Pumpkin A, B, C, (£453,600).

These fantastic results continued online with First Open: Post-War and Contemporary Art Online totalling £2,358,846 and No Regrets: The Collectors’ Edition £163,674.

L.S. Lowry masterpiece, Going to the Match, was sold to The Lowry in Salford for £7,846,500 in aid of The Players Foundation and headlined the Modern British & Irish Art Evening Sale, which totalled £20,564,100 on 19 October. We saw strong interest in British abstraction, with Bridget Riley’s Painting with Two Verticals 3 realising £1,242,000. Wrapping up this formidable season was the Modern British & Irish Art Day Sale on 20 October, with a total of £6,234,039 and selling 93% by value.
