Ensayo del lote

This sketchbook bears a Bristol-board cover. Inside are about fifty sketches and drawings, several of them worked on both sides of the sheet. The subjects include twenty-two landscapes, ten miscellaneous studies, seven figures, four nudes, four portraits, two views of Rome, and a still life. The artist's model, Renée Monchaty, can be recognized in a number of the drawings. Pencil is the medium throughout, apart from four sanguine drawings, which carry no stamp. Antoine Terrasse added annotations in places.
Six drawings relate to fully-realized paintings by the artist, each recorded in the third volume of J. and H. Dauberville's Bonnard, catalogue raisonné de l'oeuvre peint. The first is La forêt des pins, Le Cannet (Fondation Bemberg, Hôtel d'Assézat, Toulouse; D. 1228), where the sketch differs in some details from the finished painting. Next is Piazza del Popolo, Rome (Christie's, New York, 12 May 1998, lot 21; D. 1108), for which the drawing served as a study for the upper left section of the canvas. The remaining four are La soirée sous la lampe (Musée d'Orsay, Paris; D. 1096); Portrait d'homme ou L'homme rouge (Location unknown; D. 1097); Le golfe de Saint-Tropez (Musée Toulouse-Lautrec, Albi; D. 1550); and Jeunes femmes dans la rue (Private collection; D. 1124).
