A BROWN NILOTICUS CROCODILE SECRETARY DESK TRUNK WITH BRASS HARDWARE, LOUIS VUITTON, Circa 1936

Created in 1936 for Jessie Woolworth Donahue (1886–1971), heiress to the celebrated Woolworth fortune, this exceptional crocodile-skin secretary trunk forms part of one of the most extraordinary private commissions in the history of the House of Louis Vuitton.
A prominent figure in American high society, Jessie Woolworth Donahue belonged to a generation of wealthy heiresses for whom travel was inseparable from a certain art of living. Accustomed to Europe’s grand hotels, particularly the Ritz in Paris, she cultivated a pronounced taste for luxury, bespoke creations and the most exclusive objects.
The story of this commission is said to have begun in 1934, when the House of Louis Vuitton received an unusual request through its boutique in Nice. Having admired a crocodile-skin suitcase belonging to another client, Mrs Donahue expressed a desire to acquire a set of her own, one that would be even more spectacular.
Two years later, in 1936, an extraordinary ensemble of fifteen pieces was reportedly delivered to the Ritz in Paris. It included trunks, suitcases, hatboxes, jewellery cases and toiletry kits, all crafted in crocodile skin and personalised with her initials, J.W.D., in gold lettering.
The creation of such an ensemble represented a remarkable feat of craftsmanship at the time, reportedly requiring extensive efforts to source the necessary crocodile hides and underscoring the exceptional nature of the commission.
A true piece of travelling furniture, this secretary trunk stands out for its brown crocodile-skin exterior, brass fittings and ingenious opening mechanism, which reveals a writing surface and several drawers. It embodies the refinement and exceptional craftsmanship of Louis Vuitton during the interwar period.
