Lot Essay

At the Chanel Spring/Summer 2014 runway show, this vibrant graffiti backpack instantly emerged as one of the collection’s most talked-about highlights. Using the backpack as his creative canvas, Karl Lagerfeld turned fashion and accessories into a platform for artistic expression, reinterpreting the House’s iconic motifs through a playful and imaginative design language. The result was a creation that seamlessly blended artistic flair, luxurious craftsmanship, and youthful energy.

The design combines graffiti in a hand-drawn style, the iconic CC logo, watercolor-inspired effects, and a vivid color palette. Multicolored braided cords, fluorescent-colored buckles, chain details, and luggage tags further enhance its relaxed yet distinctive character. Crafted from sturdy denim and accented with braided leather and tubular PVC elements, the backpack perfectly balances the spirit of street culture with the sophistication of high fashion.

The signature CC logo, the address of Chanel’s Rue Cambon flagship boutique in Paris, and the House’s emblematic quilted motif are all rendered through a complex layering technique that creates a rich watercolor effect with remarkable depth and dimension. By elevating the spontaneity of street graffiti through meticulous craftsmanship, Chanel transformed an everyday artistic expression into a highly collectible luxury accessory. Upholding the House’s exacting standards, each backpack required many hours of skilled craftsmanship, while every graffiti element underwent careful design and multiple printing processes to achieve its distinctive visual impact.

Following its boutique release, the design quickly sparked a worldwide buying frenzy, captivating celebrities, tastemakers, and fashion insiders alike. It soon became one of the defining It bags of the 2010s, appearing extensively in street-style photography and leading fashion publications. Its enduring popularity reflects not only its cultural significance but also its status as one of the most memorable and iconic handbag creations from Karl Lagerfeld’s tenure at Chanel.
