Die Forderung der Nouveaux Réalistes setzte Daniel Spoerri im Kreise seiner Freunde am radikalsten um, ein Kunstwerk soll möglichst ohne Eingriff des Künstlers zu entstehen haben. Was der Künstler auf seinem Tisch vorfand, erklärte er mit seiner Signatur zum Kunstwerk. Die künstlerische Verfremdung ereignete sich durch einen simplen, aber effektvollen Trick: Die Gegenstände wurden direkt auf die Tischplatte fixiert, diese von der Horizontalen in die Vertikalen gedreht und an der Wand aufgehängt. Bei dieser stattgefundenen Veränderung handelt es sich um einen tatsächlichen Wandel der Realität, um künstlerische Verfremdung par excellence. Spoerri interessierte sich ausserdem für Gegenstände, die ihren Gebrauchswert eingebüsst haben, da sie Erinnerungen an die Vergangenheit transportieren. Als Bestandteile der Assemblagen werden sie zum Ausgangspunkt für Geschichten.
Den Tableaux-pièges, auch Fallenbilder genannt, verdankt der Künstler seinen internationalen Ruhm. Das bildkünstlerische Werk Spoerris lässt sich als stetige Weiterentwicklung des Fallenbildes verstehen.

Within his circle of friends, Spoerri was the most radical in meeting the challenge of Nouveaux Réalistes for an art work to come into existence with as little intervention by the artist as possible. Whatever the artist found on his table, he puts his signature to it and declared it to be art. Artistic alienation was achieved by using a simple, but effective trick: objects were secured directly onto the tabletop, which was then moved from a horizontal into a vertical position and hung on the wall. By making these changes, a transformation of reality took place, an artistic alienation par excellence. Spoerri was also interested in objects whose practical use had suffered, for they evoked memories of the past. As pieces within an assemblage, they became the springboard for stories.
