NAPOLEON I (1769-1821), Emperor of the French. Letter signed ('Bonaparte') as Commander of Army in Egypt, to Admiral Ganteaume, Cairo, 26 Nivose an 7 [15 January 1799], ordering him to Suez to inspect the naval establishments there and to organise matters for the dockyards Napoleon plans there, and thence to Kosseir, to take charge of all the Mameluke vessels there, as well as its fort, and giving a series of further orders about the organisation of naval affairs on the Egyptian coasts, 2 pages, folio, with printed heading of République Française (minor spotting, small tear on fold).

'Vous vous rendrez à Suez, Citoyen Général, vous y passerez une inspection rigoureuse de tous les établissemens de la marine de Suez: vous donnerez les ordres pour que tous les magasins et établissements soit [sic] conformes au projet que j'ai d'organiser et de maintenir à Suez un petit Arsenal de Construction ... Vous vous rendrez à cosseir. Vous vous emparerez de tous les bâtimens appartenant aux Mamelouks qui sortiraient de ce port; Vous vous emparerez du fort et vous le ferez mettre sur le champ dans le meilleur état de défense ... '.
