Lot Essay
Sold with original bill of sale, John D'Angelico, New York, August 26, 1961 This guitar has remained in the possession of the original owner since 1961, when it was purchased directly from John D'Angelico. As a young man, the owner studied guitar in Allentown, Pennsylvania, under the tutelage of a guitar teacher who happened to own two D'Angelico New Yorkers. After getting the address from his teacher, the owner traveled to D'Angelico's shop on Kenmare Street in New York, and put down a deposit for a New Yorker with a natural finish. When the owner went to D'Angelico's shop several months later to make his final payment on the guitar, he spied another New Yorker in a red sunburst finish on the workbench, and informed D'Angelico that he would prefer the same red finish for his new guitar. D'Angelico speedily obliged the request to change the finish, and the owner took possession of the guitar shortly thereafter.
