A. James Speyer (1913-1986), who originally acquired these lamps from Diego Giacometti, studied architecture in London and Paris. He received his master's degree from the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago after studying two years under Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Speyer went on to hold a professorship at IIT and in 1961 was appointed curator of Twentieth Century Paintings and Sculpture at The Art Institue of Chicago, where he remained until his death.
