Full blue morocco gilt, covers with elaborate gilt borders surrounding gilt-stamped characters at center of each cover (Alice on covers of first volume and the White Queen on the covers of the latter), spines in six compartments with five raised bands, gilt-lettered in two, a repeated floral gilt panel in the rest, edges gilt, by Root & Son; cloth slipcase. Williams-Madan-Green-Crutch 46 and 84.

[With:] DODGSON. Autograph letter signed ("Lewis Carroll"), to Miss? Evelyn Calder, South Kensington, London, 9 November 1893. 2 pages, 12mo, with original envelop addressed by the author which reads: "E. Calder, Esq. (or Miss E. Calder)...". The humorous letter reads: "As I know at least two 'Evelyns', in real life, one masculine & one feminine, I feel some difficulty in adressing this letter: but I think the mathematical process of 'alternando' will meet the difficulty. It is a great pleasure to me, to know that books of mine have given pleasure to many young folk (& perhaps a few old folk) in many parts of the world- yours is not the first I have had from an Australian reader. 'Hiawatha's Photographing' is in a volume calle 'Rhyme? And Reason?', published by Messrs Macmillan. Believe me truly yours, Lewis Carroll." (3)
