[CIVIL WAR]. [FORT SUMTER]. GILLMORE, Quincy A. Autograph letter signed ("Q. A. Gillmore"), to unidentified General, Hilton Head, S. C., 13 April 1865. 1 page, 8vo, matted and framed with illustration of Gillmore. HEADING FOR SUMTER AND THE FLAG RAISING CEREMONIES. Gillmore writes: "I think I had better go up to 'Sumter' early in the morning and look after the preparations there. I will therefore go up in my own boat, & join you at or before 9 o'clock." Gillmore had seen extensive action in the Sumter area earlier in the war, taking part in the Port Royal expedition and the unsuccessful assaults on Charelston in 1863 and 1864. He was injured while fighting in the Shenandoah Valley campaign in 1864, and returned to the Department of the South in February 1865, where he was able to be present at the dramatic re-raising of the U.S. flag over Fort Sumter on 14 April.
