FIRST EDITION. This book was originally published anonymously. Batty Langley, in his attack on the work, claimed it was by Edward Hoppus, while 'W. Robinson of Bow Lane' is named as the author in the second edition (1736). However, when the plates were reprinted in Every man a complete builder (1766), they were attributed to Edward Oakley, leading RIBA to suggest that he might also have been involved in the present work. Harris 754; RIBA 2821.
