Lot Essay
Kitagawa Tamiji lived in Mexico City and Taxco during the 1920's and early 1930's. He returned to Mexico between 1955 and 1956. So successful were his works of Mexican subjects, as is this painting, that he was awarded the Mainichi Art Prize in 1964 and a retrospective exhibition at the Nagoya City Museum (July 22-August 27, 1989) and Shizuoka Prefecture Art Museum (September 2-October 5, 1989).
