ARNOLDUS MONTANUS (1625?-1683)

Engraved allegorical additional title, 50 engraved plates, maps and portraits only (of 56, lacking 5 portraits and the map of Southern Virginia and Florida), 66 engraved illustrations, engraved headpiece and one illustration. (Sections torn out of two maps of 'Chili' and 'Paraquaria', leaf Eee2 torn with loss of text, occasional browning to maps and plates.) Contemporary mottled calf, the covers panelled in blind, gilt spine in seven compartments with raised bands, red morocco lettering-piece in the second, the others with repeat tooling in gilt (neat old repairs to head and foot of spine and corners, joints split).
A large paper copy of the first edition in English, this is a late issue including James Moxon's so-called "First Lord Proprietors' Map" of Carolina in place of the listed "Arx Carolina" map. Cf. Sabin 50089 (variant plate count).
