ZUBER'S PAPIER PEINTS (lots 32-35) The house of Zuber had its beginnings in 1790 when a cotton goods manufacturer in Mulhouse created a small paper printing workshop for his son. The factory moved to Rixheim in 1797 and in 1802 was taken over by Jean Zuber. The first panoramic sceneries Les Vues de Suisse were produced in 1804, and between 1804 and 1860, Zuber and his successors went on to produce twenty-five panoramas which included Zones Terrestres, Isola Bella and Courses des Chevaux. Zuber's Les Vues du Brésil (1829) was printed in 247 colours from 1693 blocks and Les Vues de L'Amérique du Nord (1843) in 223 colours from 1690 blocks. They count amongst the manufacturer's most complex and extravagant productions. They were produced in a number of editions through the nineteenth century and are still included in Zuber's current catalogue. Zuber's papier peints are first hand brushed with a base colour and shaded before the application of a series of engraved woodblocks. The colours are printed according to a well defined order set by the artist and called 'colours run'. The first colours to be applied are the ones colouring the largest areas, then in order from dark to light, and finally the details.
