Please note that Dr. Margret Klinge, having examined the picture, believes the foreground figures to be the work of a studio hand. The picture should be dated to the 1650s.

Lot Essay

Sir Lawrence Dundas, 1st Bt. (c. 1710-1781), whose fortune was made as a contractor during the Seven Years War, was a collector and patron of exceptional discernment. His outstanding collection of Dutch and Flemish pictures was largely housed at no. 19 Arlington Street. He owned a notable group of works by Teniers, two of which are visible in Zoffany's celebrated portrait of Dundas and his grandson, subsequently the 1st Earl of Zetland.
