C’est au détour d’un chemin de traverse, pénétrant toujours un peu plus dans ce jardin secret patiemment élaboré par Paul Haim et Gilbert Carty, que l’on découvre Mural G-336 d’Eduardo Chillida. Comme pour toutes les œuvres les plus impressionnantes de sa collection, Paul Haim avec la complicité de Jeannette Leroy a choisi de les immerger dans la nature, offrant un jeu de révélations où l’art se dévoile au hasard de la végétation. Placé en bordure d’un bassin entouré d’arbres et de bambous, la première vision qui s’offre à nous en découvrant Mural G-336 est une perception multiple où s’imbriquent les éléments graphiques de l’œuvre, les entrelacs des arbres et ses reflets mouvants dans l’eau.
Paul Haim a parfaitement compris le travail de Chillida et son attachement à la question de l’environnement de ses œuvres. En effet, tout comme pour ses célèbres Peine del Viento qui font face à la mer à San Sebastian, Mural G-336 prend toute son ampleur, confronté à l’espace naturel qui l’entoure, jouant avec les reflets changeant de l’étendue d’eau qu’il surplombe, créant un double mouvant et sans cesse renouvelé. Il s’en dégage une harmonie totale avec l’espace qu’il habite, un équilibre subtil entre le jardin et l’œuvre elle-même. Paul Haim était très sensible à cet accord et a rapporté de ses nombreux voyages au Japon un goût tout particulier pour les jardins des temples qu’il donnait en exemple à Gilbert Carty, le gardien de la Petite Escalère.
Entreprise lors de la dernière partie de son œuvre, la série des Murales représente un corps restreint et rare de seulement seize reliefs muraux réalisés par Chillida. Mural G-336 est à ce titre un superbe exemple de cet achèvement dans les recherches que le sculpteur a menées tout au long de sa vie autour de la dialectique du plein et du vide. « C’est une dialectique très directe : le vide ne peut pas exister séparément, il ne peut pas vivre sans le plein et vice versa. » explique-t-il. En effet, par le jeu du contraste entre le tracé noir et les vides laissés blancs, Chillida articule l’espace de l’œuvre et crée une aspiration, une attraction pour cette composition toute à la fois monumentale et aérienne. Paul Haim fully understood Chillida’s work and the importance the artist placed on his sculptures’ environments. In fact, just like the famous Wind Comb, which looks out over the sea in San Sebastian, Mural G-336 takes on its full meaning when viewed in conjunction with the natural setting that surrounds it. The piece interacts with the ever-changing reflections in the pond it overlooks, creating a shimmering and constantly renewed double. The overall impression is one of complete harmony with the space it inhabits, a subtle balance between the garden and the sculpture itself. Paul Haim was acutely aware of this relationship. Through his many trips to the country, he developed a special affinity for Japan's garden temples, and asked Gilbert Carty, the caretaker for La Petite Escalère, to recreate their design.
Completed during the last half of his career, the Mural series represents a rare and limited body ofonly sixteen relief murals executed by Chillida. Mural G-336 symbolises the pinnacle of the sculptor's lifelong exploration of the dialectic between positive and negative space. “It’s a very direct dialectic. Negative space cannot exist on its own: it cannot live without positive space, and vice versa,” he explains. Indeed, by creating a contrast between the black outline and the white negative space, Chillida outlines the sculpture’s space and draws the viewer in towards this simultaneously monumental and ethereal composition. The artist has found the balancing point between a special sculptural technique using ceramics – as in the Oxido series – parts of which are layered with iron oxide before firing, and the architectural compositions of Gravitaciones, work made from layers of cut paper that feature subtly balanced and interconnected elements. Mural G-336 synthesises the artist’s magnificent ability to create simple, pared-down compositions where space is created from the confrontation between his black ideograms, which enliven the negative space of the empty surface, while also constantly exploring the medium’s possibilities. “Chillida's work is characterised by his love and profound respect for the medium. He reveals the poetry within the medium, pays attention to how it behaves, observes its essence, and establishes direct communication with it,” says Nausica Sanchez in her analysis. In coating the surface with iron oxide, Chillida was not painting, but adding depth to the surface. The action of the fire breathed even more life into his powerful lines by creating subtle variations and unplanned copper hues, all of which result in a piece of timeless beauty. The product of a constant effort to re-examine his art, Mural G-336 represents a crowning achievement for Chillida, an insatiable explorer of shape and medium. “As soon as I’m sure, whenever I’ve done it already, I give up. I never believed in the saying that you have to learn how to do something before you can do it.”
