Post-War to Present

Post-War to Present

Sale Overview

This summer, Christie’s presents Post-War to Present, a vibrant auction taking place in London on 25 June, bringing together landmark post-war works in dialogue with some of the most exciting voices in contemporary art today.

Leading the sale is Cecily Brown’s exuberant The Haunter (2010), a commanding canvas by one of the most celebrated painters of her generation. Coinciding with the artist’s current exhibition at the Serpentine, the work exemplifies Brown’s virtuosic ability to dissolve the boundaries between figuration and abstraction. Further highlights include Andy Warhol’s iconic Jackie, among the artist’s most poignant and instantly recognisable images, and Günther Uecker’s Cut Soul, a striking example of the German artist’s signature nail reliefs and their meditative interplay of light and shadow.

The auction is further distinguished by Christo’s L’Arc de Triomphe, a vivid testament to one of the most ambitious projects of the artist’s career, alongside Jean-Michel Basquiat’s Untitled (Colored Boy Piano Player) (1987), a raw and energetic work on paper executed at the height of the artist’s career.

The sale also introduces a wave of fresh faces shaping contemporary art today, with works by Christina Kimeze, Jordan Casteel, Nicole Wittenberg, Anthony Cudahy and Doron Langberg.

This season, Christie’s is proud to partner with Arts Emergency on a special group of artist-donated works. With the support of Damien Hirst, Antony Gormley and Vanessa Raw, the initiative will benefit the charity’s transformative mentoring programmes for young people from underrepresented backgrounds pursuing careers in the arts and humanities.
