Born in Edinburgh in 1880, Flint began his career as an apprentice lithographic draughtsman before studying at the Royal Institute School of Art in Edinburgh. After moving to London, he worked as a medical illustrator and later produced drawings for The Illustrated London News and editions of books such as The Canterbury Tales. These early roles developed the precision and clarity of line that became central to his mature work.
After serving during World War I, Flint devoted himself entirely to painting. His luminous washes, delicate tonal harmonies and sensitive handling of texture distinguished his watercolours, while extensive travels through Spain, France and Italy inspired the Mediterranean landscapes, historic architecture and classical themes that became recurring motifs within his work.
Flint served as President of the Royal Society of Painters in Water Colours from 1936–1955, and was knighted in 1947. Throughout his long career, Flint explored the relationship between beauty, form and the human figure. His models included professional dancers, actresses and ballerinas, with Cecilia Green among his most frequent sitters.
The artist died in London in 1969. As a leading figure in British representational art, Flint's paintings continue to be admired for their technical mastery, timeless elegance and enduring contribution to British watercolour painting.
