Pierre Paulin was one of the most influential furniture and interior designers of the 20th century, celebrated for redefining the relationship between form, comfort and modern living.

Born in Paris in 1927, Paulin's initial ambitions as a sculptor were cut short by an arm injury, prompting him to study design at the École Camondo. There, he developed an approach that combined technical innovation with an instinctive understanding of the human body. From the 1950s onwards, he established a design language characterised by organic silhouettes, bold colour and pioneering manufacturing techniques.

Working with leading manufacturers including Artifort, Paulin introduced a new generation of furniture that departed from conventional upholstery and rigid construction. His iconic designs — including the Mushroom Chair (1959), Ribbon Chair (1966) and Tongue Chair (1968) — employed stretch fabrics, moulded foam and metal frames to create sculptural forms that were as visually striking as they were comfortable. Blurring the boundaries between furniture, art and architecture, his work reflected the optimism and experimentation of post-war modernism while anticipating the informal lifestyles of the late 20th century.

Paulin's reputation extended beyond furniture into interiors and exhibition design. During the 1970s, he was commissioned to decorate President Georges Pompidou’s private apartments at the Élysée Palace and to furnish the office of President François Mitterrand. The artist’s work also featured in international exhibitions and collaborations that cemented his reputation as one of France's foremost designers.

Throughout his career, Paulin remained committed to the belief that good design should unite beauty, innovation and everyday functionality. The artist died in 2009, and he was posthumously awarded the distinction of Royal Designer for Industry (RDI). Paulin’s pioneering use of new materials and production methods transformed the possibilities of furniture design, while his fluid, biomorphic forms continue to influence generations of designers.
