Born in Namur, Belgium in 1899, Michaux grew up in Brussels, developing an early interest in ornithology and entomology, as well as Chinese characters. After briefly working as a sailor, he settled in Paris, where he published his first short essay, Cas de folie circulaire, in the prominent French literary magazine Le Disque vert in 1922. His travels through Ecuador in 1927 and Asia in 1931–32 inspired Ecuador (1929) and Un Barbare en Asie (1933). Encounters with the works of Paul Klee, Max Ernst and Giorgio de Chirico inspired him to pursue painting. Although frequently associated with Surrealism, he maintained an independent practice, resisting affiliation with any single movement.
Michaux’s visual work evolved from figurative watercolours into abstract compositions. Following the death of his wife in 1948, the artist increasingly adopted a more dramatic approach, turning to ink drawing, producing rhythmic compositions of lines, dots and signs that evoke unfamiliar beings and elusive mental states. His book Mouvements (1951), which pairs dynamic ink drawings with a sequence of poems, exemplifies his search for a visual language beyond conventional writing. From 1955, he also investigated altered states of consciousness through experiments with psychedelic drugs, primarily mescaline, translating their effects into text and image in Misérable Miracle (1956) and L’Infini turbulent (1957).
His work gained global recognition through his participation in international art exhibitions such as documenta II in 1959 and documenta III in 1964, and winning the Einaudi Prize at the Venice Biennale in 1960. The Guggenheim Museum in New York held a major retrospective of his work in 1978.
Michaux became a French citizen in 1955 and died in Paris in 1984, aged 85. His enduring legacy lies in his radical reimagining of drawing and writing as complementary forms of expression. To this day, his work continues to challenge the boundaries between literature and visual art, influencing contemporary approaches to abstraction, mark-making and the visual possibilities of language.
